button.This behavior is repeatable; the first invocation of Sleep causes the screen to go off and on, and things work normally. It would keep running with the lid closed & immediately come out of sleep mode when I chose it manually. Turns out the issue was the computer's power jack & the power cord not connecting properly. Vista enables S3 sleep by default and the the default jumper position on my mother board was S1.

You may also find a "Wake on keyboard" or similar setting in your BIOS settings, though I couldn't find such a setting in any of my XP or Vista systems. (I I am a volunteer and I do not work for HP. You have to have ACPI support for this to work correctly.
